American Primitive Gallery is pleased to represent the art of Laurene Krasny Brown. Paper is the main medium which the artist cuts, folds, weaves and ties together to create intimate pictures and relief structures infused with a personal palette. Repeated forms are orchestrated with colors into sublime works of art.

The artist states, “Never do I intend to underestimate what can become of a piece of paper. For the past eleven years, paper has seduced me into its employ, with assistance from paint, string, wire, and hardware store finds. I think it’s their flexibility, helping to produce in one form or another -my intimate versions of order in the universe.”

Influenced by her study of classical piano the artist works her geometric forms into rhythmic variations of line, tone, and texture. Valuing an economy of means in materials and design enables her to savor the subtle details in the art and make color combinations resonate. A group of works are hinged to open or fold as screens and are a shift towards sculpture and the playfulness of shape shifting. Laurene Krasny Brown worked for years writing children’s picture books which may have contributed to the sense of wonder in the magic of small creations that transport the viewer.
