visual steampunk > 09/26/2008 - 11/26/2008

American Primitive Gallery will be presenting the exhibition Visual Steampunk from September 26 – November 26. The show will include diverse works by artists as well as antique objects that evoke the spirit of steampunk.

---

The genre of steampunk evolved from interest in early technological inventions interfaced with science fiction, steam era fantasy, and alternative history. Begun as a literary genre, steampunk was characterized by the writings of Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, James Blakelock and others that later influenced films, anime, and video game. The artist time traveler will experience the present with altered vision from immersion in past inventions or see other possibilities for the future.

---

Included in the show will be sculptural locomobiles by Gerard Cambon, Ice Beetle prototypes by Taras von Hrechniw and retro robots by Jim Bauer, and other artists. The show includes vintage sculptural objects in the spirit of Steampunk from musical instruments to masks, models, and odd medical devices evoking the cabinet of curiosities approach to collecting the unusual.

---

Taking artistic license, show curators Aarne Anton and Steve Erenberg have brought together diverse works of art to evoke the complexity of the genre and subculture.
